Begin your day by arriving at Chiefswood Park located along the banks of the Grand River. You will meet your canoe guide and start off by discussing the Haudenosaunee Thanksgiving Address which will provide understanding around our belief system. Next the guide will go through the safety and basic paddling lessons. Everyone will get fitted for their personal floatation devices (PFDs) and paddles. Now it is launch time! Your guide will assist you with getting into the canoe or kayak correctly and safely.

The paddle will start by going upstream. The guide will lead the group up then pull off to the side of the river and direct everyone to follow along. At the side of the river your guide will provide Haudenosaunee history and culture. The first stop will discuss our creation story and our beliefs around that.

The rest of the stops along the river will discuss the history of the Six Nations regarding our traditional lands and how we came to live in this area, the way Six Nations was when the people came to this area, the life and transportation system of the water ways, stories of adaption and survival, and family life. While on the Grand River you will be able to enjoy the Carolinian Forest that surrounds the river and the wildlife in and around the river.

We welcome all visitors to discover what Six Nations of the grand River has to offer through our Cultural Experience Packages. We can accommodate a cultural experience for every visitor.

Below are details on our Cultural Experience Packages and Historic Sites.

Historical Sites:

Chiefswood National Historic Site:

Chiefswood National Historic Site is the childhood home to Mohawk Poetess E. Pauline Johnson. Chiefswood NHS represents both the Mohawk culture of Pauline's father and British, Victorian culture of her mother. Pauline was caught in the middle and her writing and career reflect this.

Her Majesty's Royal Chapel of the Mohawks:
The Mohawk Chapel is the oldest building on our territory. Built in 1785 its eight stained glass windows depict the founding of the confederacy, or relationship to the British Crown, the relocation to the Grand River, the history of the Chapel and its relationship to the Mohawk Institute. This Chapel was part of the original grounds of the Mohawk Institute.
